Meditation

$1,100.00

Oil on Canvas

30” x 24” x 1.4”

Part of the Iris Collection, a study of sacred spaces in nature, Meditation recognizes the mind as both holy and commonplace. This painting depicts a purple Dutch iris, many of which grow wild near my childhood home. Each beautiful among the multitudes.

The swirling sunlight and whimsical background are inspired in part by Van Gogh’s Starry Night. The color palette evokes a peaceful space that defies actual physical space. Instead, it’s a peaceful and calming state of mind. As a study in sacred spaces, I wanted to bring in this important mental space and recognize the value of it as a holy space.

The Dutch iris is personally significant as they would grow wild in the woods and meadows around my childhood home. Sitting among these flowers as a carefree child is one of the happiest, peaceful, and most freeing sensations I can remember. It felt natural to pair this flower and a sense of peaceful meditation together in this large oil painting.

Finally, I don’t think it’s insignificant that Meditation is the largest piece in the Iris Collection. In my faith, I have found that the closest I have felt to God’s presence is when I dedicate time to seeking Him in my heart. James 4:8 says that if we draw near to God, He WILL draw near to us. It’s a promise we can count on. In the darkest times, we don’t need to do or be anything other than who we are in the presence of the God who loves us. There’s so much peace and reassurance in that.
